Are you scared yet? There's not alot that scares me. Actually, I should qualify that, there are plenty of things in the real world that make me want to board the windows and sandbag the doors but I'm talking horror fiction here. I'm not really scared of monsters or guys with chain saws or satanic beasts from hell. But if I had to pick something that frightened me by just thinking about it, it would be the idea of being trapped in the middle of nowhere and surrounded with no one to help and nowhere to turn. This is essentially the idea that got me thinking about the story for 30 days of night. then, years ago, when I read an article about a place in Alaska where the sun goes down for weeks at a time, where alcohol is illegal because of the suicide rate, my brain began to buzz. What if they read the same article I had? What if they planned an attack? What if the people of Barrow Alaska were cut off - trapped and surrounded by Vampires?! That's what scares me. Steve Niles |
