NIGHT KNELLS

Written By Royce Sykes

Night knells sonorously stalk
streets midnight thin and alleys
where shadows shift abruptly.

Even the cicadas hush,
seem unnerved as breezes fail
with the tolling of the hour.

It's not at what follows day
I stare so blindly, clawing
slowly a forgotten book.

Distant siren wails and yet,
inexorably, the chimes
continue after it dies.

Close the window, still the sill
vibrates as if of lost souls
tapping, wanting to come home.

There is no haven in sleep
nor sanctuary in dreams
echoing with the night knells
